Everyone says build your brand around who you are.

In the time of AI, extreme noise, mediocre content and same-same stories, I disagree.

And I think the gap is about to get much wider.

Here's what's coming.

‍

Anyone with AI can now sound like you. Your tone, your style, your digital presence — all reproducible with a prompt. I'm already seeing it. Websites and brands replicated with AI in hours. Not rough copies. Convincing ones.

The things the branding industry told you were your edge — personality, aesthetics, voice — are becoming the easiest things to copy. A competitor can feed your website into an AI and have something that looks and sounds comparable by tomorrow morning.

This isn't a future problem. It's already happening.

So the question every independent expert needs to sit with right now is: what's left when everything surface-level can be replicated?

‍

The answer is how you think.

Not what you know. Not how you sound. How you think.

The methodology you've developed through years of solving real problems. The point of view you hold about your field that most of your peers don't share. The way you diagnose, connect, and reach conclusions others miss.

This isn't soft stuff. This is extremely specific.

It's the consultant who doesn't start with the obvious problem — she starts two levels underneath it because she's learned that's where the real issue always lives. It's the advisor who sees a pattern across three industries that no one in any single industry has named yet. It's the fractional leader who has a specific sequence for turning around dysfunctional teams — a sequence she's refined over fifteen years but never once written down.

That's original thinking. Methodology plus point of view.

AI can't extract it. Your competitors can't replicate it. A prompt can't generate it. It only exists because you've spent years doing the work, in the trenches, getting the reps.

It is the last true moat an independent expert has.

‍

So why don't people build around it?

Because they're standing inside their own thinking.

It feels obvious to them, not original. They use it every day without noticing it. Their best clients experience it directly — it's the reason those clients come back and refer others. But the expert herself has never named it.

And here's the thing about what isn't named: it can't be positioned.

So instead they default to the playbook the industry keeps selling. Be more visible. Post more content. Refine your personal brand. Find your niche. None of which addresses the actual problem — that the most valuable thing about them is completely invisible to the market.

I see it constantly. An expert with fifteen years of deep methodology, positioning herself on credentials and experience. A consultant with a genuinely original diagnostic framework, describing himself as "a strategic advisor who helps companies grow." A fractional CMO with a point of view that would reshape how her market thinks about the function, writing content about marketing tips.

The original thinking is right there. Sitting in plain sight. It's just not in the brand.

And that's a problem, because here's what's about to happen.

‍

‍

The market is going to split in two.

On one side: experts whose brands are built on the things AI can replicate. Personality. Aesthetics. Content volume. Generic positioning. They'll be competing in a market where the playing field has been completely leveled by technology. More noise, less differentiation, downward pressure on fees. A race to the bottom dressed up as personal branding.

On the other side: experts whose thinking is visible. Named. Positioned. Built into every layer of their brand. Impossible to confuse with anyone else — because what they're known for is something only they could have developed through their specific experience.

The first group will work harder and harder to stay visible.

The second group will be chosen because their thinking precedes them.

This isn't about being anti-AI. I use AI every day. It's an extraordinary tool for execution. But it's a terrible foundation for differentiation — because if AI can build it, AI can replicate it. That's the whole point.

‍

So here's the shift that matters.

Your brand isn't who you are. Your brand is how you think.

The experts who understand this early will have a significant advantage — not because they're louder or more visible, but because they've built their entire market position around the one thing that's genuinely, irreplaceably theirs.

The methodology. The point of view. The original thinking.

Everything else is about to become a commodity. Some of it already has.

The question is whether you'll name yours before the market makes the decision for you. Because the market will decide. It always does. And it won't be kind to the people who are still competing on the same things an AI can produce for free.
