Your best clients could describe what makes you different better than you can.
That's not a guess. I've seen it happen in almost every engagement. I ask the expert to explain what makes their work distinct. I get a solid but generic answer - experience, methodology, results, maybe a niche.
Then I speak to their clients. And I hear something completely different. Specific. Vivid. A way of thinking the expert never thought to mention - because to them it's just how they work.
I was working with a change management consultant who described herself as "a specialist with 20 years of experience." When I spoke to one of her clients, they said something entirely different: "She sees the political dynamics in a room before anyone's said a word and restructures the entire approach around it."
Same person. Two completely different brands.
This is what I call the proximity problem. And it affects virtually every independent expert I've ever worked with.
You are too close to your own thinking to see what makes it valuable. You've been doing it for so long that it feels ordinary. Your specific lens on problems, the patterns you catch that others walk past, the methodology you use instinctively but have never named - all of it is invisible to you. Not because it's not there.
Because you're standing inside it. And if you can't see it, the market definitely can't. So the market does what it does when it can't tell the difference between you and someone with similar credentials. It defaults to price. Availability. Whoever showed up most recently.
This is why more content doesn't fix it.
More visibility doesn't fix it.
You can't make something visible that you haven't extracted yet. You'd just be amplifying the same generic positioning - louder. The fix isn't working harder on your brand. It's getting far enough outside your own thinking to see its shape for the first time.
Here's one question that starts to surface it:
What do the people who know your work say about you that they wouldn't say about someone else with your title and experience?
Don't answer from your own perspective. Ask them. The gap between what you think makes you different and what they experience as different - that's where your real positioning lives.
